Sail With Hiraya
Batch Hiraya: The Philippine Contingent to the 48th SSEAYP
The 48th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) marked the highly anticipated return of this prestigious cultural exchange and youth leadership program aboard the M.S. Nippon Maru after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The SSEAYP, a joint initiative between Japan and the ASEAN member states, has long been a platform for young leaders to foster regional unity, youth empowerment, and intercultural understanding.

The Philippine contingent to the 48th SSEAYP sought to be a beacon of hope, guiding youth toward turning their dreams into action while embracing opportunities for growth. They proudly carried the name Batch "Hiraya," an ancient Tagalog term meaning “the realization of one’s hopes, dreams, and aspirations” and the deeper essence behind the word “sana.” They aspired to leave a lasting legacy through stories of hope, transformative optimism, and enduring camaraderie. This dynamic group of 15 youth leaders from across the Philippines was led by National Leader Atty. Aelan Arumpac, with Jefferson Hilario and Zyjazz de Guzman serving as Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Leader, respectively.

Over the course of 38 days, the contingent sailed on a journey of a lifetime together with young leaders across ASEAN and Japan and made port of calls in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Japan. The participating youths immersed themselves in a rich interaction of diverse cultures through a variety of interactive sessions, community immersions, and other meaningful activities together with the locals, organizations, and government officials.

The program also featured capacity-building workshops that equipped them with essential leadership skills, fostering a deeper appreciation of different perspectives and innovative approaches to community development. These experiences strengthened their commitment to driving positive change in their respective communities, ensuring that the impact of SSEAYP extends far beyond their time at sea.

During the program, the contingent proudly presented their national showcase, “Pasundayag”, a Cebuano term meaning "showcase." True to its name, Pasundayag embodied the spirit of the 48th SSEAYP, offering a vibrant display of the Philippines' rich culture, history, and diversity. Through captivating traditional dances and music performances, the contingent not only celebrated their heritage but also forged deep connections with their fellow participating youths. Their heartfelt performance left a lasting impression, creating unforgettable memories that resonated long after the final curtain fell.

By integrating cultural exchange with leadership development, participants not only broaden their perspectives but also cultivate the essential skills needed to drive meaningful change. Through in-depth discussions on pressing global issues, including mental health, climate change, soft power, youth diplomacy, economic growth and sustainability, disaster risk reduction, and the digital society, they develop a strong sense of responsibility and agency within their communities. This holistic approach aspires to shape a new generation of leaders who are culturally aware, socially responsible, and equipped to address the challenges of the future.

Their journey in SSEAYP was more than an opportunity for cultural exchange, it was also a transformative experience that deepened their understanding of regional cooperation, leadership, and global citizenship.
They returned not only as representatives of the Philippines but also as ambassadors of goodwill with the vision of building a better society with and through the Filipino youth. The lessons they learned on youth diplomacy, cross-cultural collaboration, and sustainable development will continue to shape their work as changemakers in their respective communities.
