Relive. Reminisce. Reconnect.
Relive. Reminisce. Reconnect.
In 2009, a remarkable journey embarked upon the waters of Southeast Asia, echoing the seafaring traditions of Filipino ancestors. Launched by retired Philippine Navy officer Arturo Valdez, the Voyage of the Balangay was a modern replica of the ancient boat that would travel across the seas, promoting cultural revival and exploration.
SSEAYP Balanghay Vision.
For the 36th SSEAYP batch, adapting “Balanghay” was like embarking on a similar “symbolic” journey. This time, aboard the MV Fuji Maru – the first SSEAYP batch to do so as Nippon Maru underwent repairs. Balanghay a.k.a. Barangay also describes the Philippines’ smallest political unit, which the PPYs took to heart. A community of emerging young leaders who honor civic mindedness and nationalism.

With a steadfast mission to showcase the best of the Philippines and of Filipinos, Pangkat Balanghay set itself apart. First, participating youths from ASEAN and Japan, fondly recall how the Philippine PYs were not only known for their congeniality but also how they allowed other contingents to “shine” – evidence of their respect for cultural sensitivities and creating an atmosphere of cooperation and inclusion.

Second, Pangkat Balanghay introduced other innovations in cultural and club activities, such as:
The cultural program “Sanghiyas” showcased the evolution of LOVE, from traditional to retro and pop renditions of Filipino dance and song.
Hosted the praying of the rosary with Christian PYs during the feast of the Immaculate Concepcion.
Staged a Pinoy Christmas party which enjoined the participation of other PYs and the Administration officers for the entertainment numbers. Attendees were treated to wacky parlor games, exchanging of gifts, caroling and a flash mob dance!
Balanghay spearheaded a massive donation drive for the 100 + crew of MV Fuji Maru. Items included personal items and food stuff that would otherwise be disposed by the PYs after the program.

The reputation of the Philippines would be tested when news of the Maguindanao massacre spread that fateful day in November 2009. The tragedy weighed heavily on the PPYs. Putting political leanings aside, the PPYs emerged to show a united front and to appeal to all for sobriety.
Today, Pangkat Balanghay continue to embody their values and contribute to integral sectors of society such as in government, health, education, and business. Long after disembarking MV Fuji Maru, the bonds forged and familial relationship remain.
