Relive. Reminisce. Reconnect.
In 2019, a cohort of dynamic and enthusiastic young Filipinos embarked on a remarkable journey as representatives of the Philippines to the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP). Carrying the name “Sakabyas” – a Maguindanaon term which means “unique” or “new faces”, 27 youth leaders from different regions of the Philippines embarked in a voyage aboard Nippon Maru, led by their National Leader, Jamel Mamutuk with Maco Ravanzo and Frances Ivy Carasi as their Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Leader.

Batch Sakabyas is composed mainly of educators, communication experts, entrepreneurs and social workers, each bringing their unique backgrounds, talents, and perspectives on the table. For 50 days, the batch travelled on-board the Japanese Cruise Ship MS Nippon Maru and made ports of call in Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia.

Though often seen by other contingents as a fun and easygoing bunch, Batch Sakabyas excelled in Solidarity Activities, Discussion Groups and PY Seminars. The batch showcased their proficiencies in their respective fields and advocacies, sharing their ideas and perspectives in discussions that challenged the status quo. Through traditional dances, music performances, culinary delights, and interactive workshops, they captivated their fellow participants and left a lasting impression that transcended geographical boundaries.

In their National Presentation entitled “Dyip”, Batch Sakabyas took the SSEAYP delegation on a ride aboard a jeepney to the different islands of the Philippines; from the rich culture of Luzon, to dances of Mindanao, and to vibrant festivals of Visayas. The batch also highlighted the pressing social issues in the country and posed a question on the acceptability of these circumstances. The batch ended their performance with a tribute to the overseas Filipino workers, the unsung heroes that keep Nippon Maru at its best.

Upon their return to the Philippines, Batch Sakabyas brought back with them a wealth of experiences, memories, and friendships that will last a lifetime. They emerged not only as ambassadors of the country but also as ambassadors of peace, unity, and solidarity in a world that is increasingly interconnected and interdependent.
